An Interview with Corinne Cantwell: Commercial Lines Insurance Jobs Offer Endless Possibilities

/ By Cowan Insurance Group

At Cowan Insurance Group, we believe in our employees' talent potential and work with employees to develop expertise through mentoring and learning opportunities. With an emphasis on a job candidate's passion, drive, and creativity, we welcome people from all backgrounds and help them build successful careers in the insurance industry.

Corinne Cantwell started her career at Cowan 11 years ago and has experienced tremendous growth. Corinne shares her background, what brought her here, and her unique career path.

What brought you to Cowan?

Several years ago, I met a woman who works at Cowan in personal insurance when our sons played hockey together. She mentioned that Cowan had an opening for a part-time scanning technician. At that time, I wasn't sure what direction to go with my career. I had two young boys, no post-secondary education, and my only previous work experience was in retail. The job opening at Cowan seemed like a great opportunity, so I applied and got the job.

How has your career grown since starting at Cowan?

I love that there is always something new to learn, room to grow, and opportunities to explore new roles. At this point, I don't know where I will end up because there are so many avenues and endless possibilities.

One of the great things about working here is that managers and leaders want to help you grow and succeed in your career. They do whatever they can to help you reach your potential. I got to know the employees and the insurance industry during the first few months. I was given an opportunity to grow with the company. I had great mentors who have guided me in every aspect of my journey, from a part-time scanning technician to a commercial account representative.

Are you looking to take the next step in your career?

Two months into my new job as a scanning technician, the full-time receptionist at the Hamilton office left. I was promoted to a permanent role as her replacement. A year later, I transitioned into client support for personal insurance. A few months later, I obtained my Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) license to become an account manager in personal insurance. I work as a customer account representative and will start the Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker 1 course this autumn. My coworkers and managers have helped me so much along the way.

What is your current role at Cowan?

As a commercial account representative, I provide exceptional client service and assist the commercial account executives I work with on client operations. I also complete renewals, update summaries, handle all the billing and transactions, and process endorsements. It's a fast-paced and busy job but exciting and meaningful work. I enjoy helping clients achieve peace of mind by determining the right coverage, working with my colleagues, and learning new things.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The best part about my job is the people I work with and the clients I serve. Even though it's a big company, everyone I have worked with has been very down-to-earth and the most welcoming team of people. We all have challenges but are willing to step up and help one another when required.

I also enjoy being able to help people, especially right now. Everyone needs insurance, even during a pandemic. I like that I'm here to ensure our clients get their needs.

What advice do you have for people interested in starting a career in the insurance industry?

In my experience, Cowan is interested in passionate and driven people. There are many advancement opportunities if you are interested and willing to get additional certifications and licenses. The insurance industry is constantly changing. It's essential to keep up-to-date by researching and learning new regulations and trends, understanding the systems used, and attending events and webinars. Don't be afraid to be curious, ask questions, show initiative, and prove you're willing to learn. Insurance is always needed, so you can have a long, exciting, and fulfilling career if you have that drive and passion.
